AD(H)D - children (attention deficit [hyperactive] disorder) are inattentive, [hyperactive], and/or impulsive in quite specific actions: motion, fidgeting, easily distracted, talking continuously, not appearing to listen, trouble playing quietly. There is no test. Behaviors must be observed from multiple settings for more than six months. Only a physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist can diagnose AD(H)D. Autism Spectrum Disorders - affect individuals along a spectrum. Some children have severe impairments and others have milder impairments. Children under the Autism Spectrum usually exhibit impairment in three main areas: social interaction; verbal and nonverbal communication; and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Aspergers Syndrome - is one of the subgroups in the Autism Spectrum but with two major areas of concern: social impairment and sensory problems. These children must be taught social skills in a very precise manner. Dyslexia - means flipped letters to most individuals. However, dyslexia actually means any kind of difficulty reading the printed page: flipped letters, lack of knowing letters and letter sounds, a lack of skills in reading. Reading is taught not caught. Gifted - children give evidence of uncommonly high performance and are capable intellectually, creatively, artistically, or in specific academic fields when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment. Gifted can be both gifted and learning impaired. Irlen - Reading problems can also involve Irlen Syndrome. This is a visual perceptual disorder affecting 48-52% of challenged learners. This syndrome causes distortion on the printed page. Corrections for this problem are the use of colored overlays and Irlen filters. |
